Relationship Counseling

Relationships are an essential part of our lives, and we all struggle with them and long to reach greater fulfillment in them. We spend many hours and many dollars learning about all kinds of other important subjects and doing all kinds of things, but strangely enough, we often believe that we are all supposed to be naturally capable of building healthy lives and relationships.

This is simply not the case. We all absorb relationship models and habits from our families and our environment, and these models are often painful and dissatisfying ones. We would like to be able to be different, but no matter how much we try, we end up repeating the same old patterns, over and over again!

A first step towards the kind of life and relationships that we want is coming to terms with the fact that we need new information, new models to follow, and guidance to help us learn and apply them in our lives.

In Relationship Counseling, the focus is on getting to the root of your life and relationship issues and on helping you to:

evaluate your current situation and, if you are in pain, are struggling or are simply dissatisfied in your life and/or relationships, become aware of what within you is calling you towards greater fulfillment, and how to move towards it;

build your self-esteem so you can begin to believe you deserve the love and harmony you long for—and begin receiving it;

learn new ways of understanding and handling your life and relationship “issues” that can help you feel ever more in charge of creating your own happiness.

 Antonio Mercurio’s Existential Personalistic Anthropology places at the center of all work the development of the PERSON, defined as someone who is “capable of freely loving him or herself, loving others and receiving love”. This type of love of Self is not egotistical or egocentric: it is a fundamental ability to care for yourself, be responsible for your own life and interact with others in a proper balance of giving and receiving.And it is also something more.

As we grow and learn to become Persons, we can contribute the great gift of our unique talents, abilities and perspectives to the greater wellbeing of those around us, and to Life itself.

Therefore learning the Art of becoming a Person is not only a gift that we give to ourselves to help us feel better and live more in tune with who we really are, but it is also a gift we give to others. As we learn to love ourselves, everyone benefits, and they also are inspired to learn more for themselves as well! This is how we can truly move towards a better life for everyone - by each individual doing their part in learning first and foremost how to love themselves, so they can truly pass on this wisdom to others.

I offer individual and group counseling services, and also work with families, work teams and other groups of people who are developing creative projects and feel they could benefit from guidance in understanding how to best honor and harmonize the different personalities of the individuals involved.

Some of the types of group work currently available are:

Relationship Group for Women

This group offers women a safe, nourishing environment where they can increase their ability to set healthy boundaries, learn important stress management, self-care and communication techniques, and enhance their ability to maintain healthy self-focus while giving to others. If you are not currently in an intimate relationship, this group is a great way to help you find the love you are looking for; if you are, it can help you  improve the relationships you now have, with your loved ones, at work and in every area of your life.

During each session we will concentrate on a specific topic, such as:

- defining and developing healthy boundaries
- learning specific individualized techniques for Care of Self and Love of Self (the best way to enhance your relationships!)
- letting go of expectations and judgments so you can move towards greater freedom in every area of your life
- creating new ways of communicating your needs and feelings to others
- exploring meditation techniques that can help you get in touch with your deep self.

If you are longing for greater harmony within yourself and in your relationships, this group can be a powerful way for you to get in tune with a whole new dimension of yourself as a Person - capable of loving yourself, loving others and being loved - and as a Woman.

Being a Woman - yes, with a capital "W"! - who loves herself truly and deeply is one of the great challenges of our time, and is at the foundation of a higher quality of Life for everyone.

This group meets once every other week for a total of 8 sessions.
Cost: $20/ session. Registration required.
A commitment to the entire cycle of 8 sessions is required,

Relationship Group for Men

Beginning in 2011, date to be announced

This group will offer men a confidential space where they can explore new ways to handle their relationships, while honoring their masculine selves. In today’s world, many men are wanting to learn how to be more present and available in their relationships, without compromising what they know to be true for them. During this group we will look at specific ways men can learn to open up to new ways of relating with others, and especially the women in their lives, while being able to express more effectively a healthy paternal principle that is so important for everyone, both men and women.

The group will meet every other week for a cycle of eight sessions.
Cost: $20/ session.

Contact Martha for a free consultation to explore whether this is a good fit for you.
